On Friday, Donald Trump's former Vice President, Mike Pence, spoke out on the former president's Manhattan trial and conviction, calling it a "disservice to the nation."

Former Vice President Mike Pence reacted on Friday to the criminal conviction of former President Donald Trump in a New York City courtroom and said a "terrible message" has been sent.

"The conviction of former President Trump on politically motivated charges is an outrage and disservice to the nation," Pence told Fox News Digital.

"No one is above the law, but our courts must not become a tool to be used against political opponents," Pence continued. "To millions of Americans, this was nothing more than a political prosecution driven by a Manhattan DA who ran for office on a pledge to indict the former president and this conviction undermines confidence in our system of justice."

It's important to note that the former vice president and his former boss haven't been getting along well of late; former VP Pence only recently refused to endorse Donald Trump's reelection bid.

The former vice president went on to speak about the broader implications of the case.

"This conviction also sends a terrible message to the wider world about the American justice system and only further divides us at a time when the American people are struggling under the failed policies of the Biden administration at home and abroad," he added.

Pence continued, "Having been convicted in a court of law, the former president has every right to appeal this conviction and I trust it will be overturned on appeal in a manner that will restore public confidence in our system of justice and equal treatment under the law."

Mike Pence appears to have faith that the conviction will eventually be overturned, and he may well be right. But it's likely that the United States, at least the citizens who are to the political right of Che Guevara, have lost confidence in "our system of justice and equal treatment under the law" to the degree where it cannot be regained. The American people have been treated to the non-interest in Hunter Biden's China and Ukraine dealings, Hillary Clinton's attempts to conceal the improper handling of classified documents, Joe Biden's boxes of classified material in his garage, even as far back as Bill Clinton's payoff of Paula Jones.

Mike Pence may not be a devotee of Trump, but it's to his credit that he can see the sham that this prosecution and its outcome have been. Last year, he remarked:

"I think the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the United States on a campaign finance issue is an outrage," Pence told CNN in March 2023. "And it appears to millions of Americans to be nothing more than a political prosecution."

Mr. Pence has, then, been clear for some time on his views as to the nature of this case.

However great a disservice to the nation this trial and conviction are, there is a silver lining: They do nothing to make Joe Biden a better candidate.
