President Trump attended a D-Day ceremony this morning marking the 75th anniversary of the Allied invasion and the opening of the Western Front.
By all accounts, including Nancy Pelosi’s response, his speech was very well done, respectful, and fit the occasion. In short, there was essentially nothing to complain about here. But we live in 2019 and that means the media must scrape the bottom of the barrel to try to take partisan shots somehow.
Enter these hot takes.
French television cameras spotted President Trump sitting down with Fox’s Laura Ingraham – fourteen minutes *after* the ceremony in Normandy was set to begin. Thousands of people waited as an announcement overhead came on, declaring the program would be delayed until 11:15a.

CNN’s Jim @Acosta: “One of the reasons why he [Trump] was late getting here, he was sitting down with a Fox News personality…and so it’s possible he was dishing out a lot of that red meat while he was sitting down with Fox before giving this speech.” @IngrahamAngle #DDay75 pic.twitter.com/Jiy7I6PjO6

President Trump is late to the D Day Anniversary ceremony at the cemetery overlooking Omaha beach. Veterans of D Day & the French President waited as @realDonaldTrump failed to get here on time from his golf club in Ireland.

You can feel the angst just reading those tweets. They really, really hate the President and even on a solemn day like today, where the entire western world is honoring the sacrifices of thousands, they couldn’t just give it a rest. They wanted everyone to know what a scumbag they think Trump is and that he’s so awful that he couldn’t even be bothered to show up on time for the ceremony.
There’s one problem and you can probably guess it.
It’s fake news.
As @JonLemire notes: from pool’s vantage point, the president appeared to be done and ready before Macron arrived, at which point ceremony began.

The real story is that French President Emmanuel Macron was the one who was late. The NBC Correspondent above was wrong when he claimed the French President was in position, waiting on President Trump.
Here’s the thing with Presidents. The Secret Service doesn’t let them stand around in the open for 30 minutes, outside, waiting around for other leaders to show up. The ceremony was in an exposed location surrounded by hundreds of people. It’s not just probable, but almost certain that the Secret Service knew exactly, to the minute, when Macron would be there and that the President was following a predetermined plan. In fact, Trump still ended up in position and ready before Macron got there.
This all should have been obvious to anyone trying to report on this, but that didn’t stop Acosta and the above NBC correspondents from spreading a false story anyway. These people never learn because they don’t want to learn. They know they can get their shots in and never be held accountable for it. Tomorrow, we’ll be onto the next faux outrage. Same story, different day.
